New Year, New You?

New Year New You

When I see titles like New Year, New You? I think to myself—what was wrong with the old me? I made it through the year without hurting anybody, at least intentionally. I followed my workout and lifestyle eating plan to a T. I sought to improve & educate myself in areas of interest or necessity. So I ask myself again, when a New Year rolls around—with each New Year does there have to be a New You?

My New Year contemplation always begins on the first day of my birthday month, as that is the New Year where I will be fortunate enough to turn a year older and hopefully with the experiences of the past year, a year “wiser”. I put the term wiser in quotes because what does wiser even really mean? Does it mean—I have truly learned from my experiences and will make better choices from here on out if necessitated; I have taken stock of the brevity of life and replaced quantity with quality; I have earned more and spent less in anticipation of what I truly want out of life (to live on the shore in a nice little beach house) and have I given the world, my authentic self, flaws and all absent of the way I have let the world and my former experiences shape me?

Authenticity and the quest of getting back there, turned out to be, for me—my wiser. Authentic in my relationships, even at the expense of losing them, authentic in what I really wanted out of life but mostly authentic to the strong woman I have always been and to the stronger one I want to become.

I have had two substantial seismic shifts in my past New Year that have brought me closer to the authentic self I seek. One taught me that I no longer have to or simply cannot make people feel better for past things I can not change. I can make amends but I can not change a journey that is not mine to take—wiser. The second shift was a bit harder. I learned that it is ok that to every relationship there is a reason, or a season but not all are meant to last a lifetime…wiser.

New Year, New You? How about New Year, Wiser You!
